Hi all,
Here in the Upper Blue Mountains we are about 30km away (as the raven
flies) from the fires at the foot of the mountains, and with the wind
blowing coastwards away from us. However, being near the top of the plateau
means that I can see some of the fires from my house. During the day I see
the huge palls of smoke to the east, and at night the flames are visible
even from this distance. As I type this message I can see flames on the
horizon to the south-east; through the binoculars I can pick out individual
trees on fire and occasional flare ups. This would be at least 30-40km away.
Thank you to everyone who has expressed concern, and like you my thoughts
are with those in the affected areas. I think there are a few regular
contributors to Birding-aus who are in the immediate areas of the fires.
