g'day all,
This morning I received a phone call about a TF that was sitting on
the grass near a friends' house..
It had moved several times over the last two days...but always on
the grass.
TFs have been seen previously at his property.
... It appeared to be full sized.
... It appeared to be in good health.
... I was able to get within 2m without the bird moving, except
opening its eyes and gaping.
... There were some small black ants (species ?) crawling over the
bird.
My only other experience of anting was a Blue-winged Kookaburra that
was obviously anting with "meat ants" crawling over it.
My only knowledge of ants is that they bite....but I did find this
URL listing 100 species for Oz.
http://www.ento.csiro.au/science/ants/
Was the TF anting ?
Do TFs roost on the ground ?
Anybody got any opinions ?
Regards, Bob Forsyth, Mount Isa, NW Qld.
