My copy of Thomas & Thomas only seems to say Grey Wagtails are
"apparently regular in Arnhem Land each wet season".
Some years the Jim Jim road is open well into November - which might
overlap with any Grey Wagtails. Two years ago, we got to Jim-Jim in the
3rd week in November. I didn't visit the top of the falls and didn't
notice any Wagtails below the falls.
It was great trip though. Earlier rains had the falls flowing well,
judging by photos I've seen, it was more spectacular than the dry
and more beautiful than the awesome torrent at the height of the wet.
Snorkelling in the creek just below the plunge pool was interesting,
with quite few species of fish to be seen.
I'd guess during some of the wet you could 4wd much of the way to Jim
Jim and walk the rest as a 2-3 day trip, but I don't know if Kakadu Parks
would permit this.
There is rocky stream habitat in Kakadu accessible by 2wd for most of the
wet. The Barrk walk behind Nourlangie Rock goes up a small rocky stream.
You could also park at the start of the Gubara Pools walk and instead walk
up the Koongara road (not 2wd). Several small rocky streams cross the
Koongara road within the first kilometre. The streams in both places,
are much smaller than Jim Jim creek and might be too small to attract
Grey Wagtails but both are good places to see the sandstone flora and
fauna - much of it endemic to Kakadu or Arnhem Land or Arnhem Land +
the Kimberley.
