The Year of the Outback has been extensively promoted on ABC Radio (at
least here in NSW).
On the twitchathon my fellow Whacked Out Woodswallow team member Mike Todd
raised the suggestion of trying to do the twitchathon "out west". While
such a route wouldn't produce the species tally to win it has, however,
planted the seed of an idea.
How many of the serious twitchathoners would be interested in a special
one-off Outback Twitchathon with proceeds going to Newhaven (truly a good
outback cause)? The twitchathon would be separate to the annual October
event - perhaps held in early September (??). A few simple rule changes
might be required. I would suggest that the state boundaries be dropped
as I think the Victorians might be slightly (though not necessarily)
disadvantaged. The boundaries would need to be set to determine the
limits of the outback for this purpose. In NSW this might be west of
Walgett, Warren, West Wyalong, Hay, Swan Hill. I have given about 30
seconds thought to this so it is obviously open to debate. The
twitchathon, as I see it, would also be a 36 hour event starting at 6AM
Saturday and finishing at 6PM Sunday. The starting and finishing points
would be flexible but the finishing point would need to be registered
before the event.
Any takers? Anyone volunteering to organise it in their state? If we can
get it off the ground we might be able to get it sanctioned as an official
Year of the Outback event raising the profile of birding at the same time
as raising funds for Newhaven. I'm sure we could get some media interest
in such a bizarre event.
If there is enough interest we need to get planning quickly.
