Trevor,
I do not know why they are called Welcome Swallow, but there are four english
names listed in the CSIRO Index of Australian Bird Names: Welcome Swallow,
Australian Swallow, House Swallow and swallow. Lucas and Le Souef in their 1911
The Birds of Australia use the name Australian Swallow, I dont know when the
name Welome Swallow came into usage.
Vigors anfd Horsfield, when describing this species in 1827 did not give an
English name for this species. they stated that " In Mr Caley's MSS we find the
following observations ... The natives call the swallow, Berrin'nin..." . I
have not been able to locate and further use of this name in the Aboriginal
namebooks or wordlists.

Help please,
I was asked by an American birder how did the Welcome Swallow get its name?
I don't know and wondered if others could help me please.
