Mother Carey's Chickens is an alternate sailors name for storm petrels, and once in use there, has no doubt somehow also been transposed to another ship-following seabird, the Giant Petrel. We do know, I thought , who Mother Carey was; it is a corruption of Mater Cara, one of the epithets of Maria, the mother of Christ, and as such often used by the Spanish and Portuguese sailors who were the first westerners in the southern seas.
