now i am an absoloute novice when it comes to birds. i am compelled to tell anyone about this bird that my wife an I gleefully observed after being alerted to this birds extremely loud call (i mean, got me up during a late afternoon nap)
We moved into the only wooded suburb of inner Sydney, Bardwell Park last year and were astounded by the variety of birds in the area!
Yesterdays sighting was one I shall never forget ( please understand my ignorance) This bird which initially i thought was some type of sea bird (but triple the size) was being harrased by a number of magpies. I took out a set of bino's and observed this bird noteing its large pale yellow beak the red around its eyes white belly, grey colouring through its feathers, as well as it black feet.
Well I could not wait at 4pm on a sunday (18/11/01) I purchased a book on australian birds an identified it as a mature channel bill. What a sight! (what a call!)
I took a photo but just missed out on video as by this time (about 15 mins of constant harrasment by other birds it gracefully flew east towards the north of Botany Bay.
I think I've found a new interest.
