At least 100 White-throated Needletails yesterday (Monday 5th November)
close to Atkinson's Dam in the Lockyer Valley.
Feeding so low that their white throats were boldly visible with the naked
eye, and just for once not flashing by at enormous speeds when they did come
very close, but hawking in an almost leisurely fashion. The whole flock was
tending to move westwards.
Pallid Cuckoos are noisy and visible all day every day throughout the
valley, Horsfield's Bronze-cuckoo likewise, Koels similarly, Little-bronze
Cuckoo is also a regular, while Channel-billed Cuckoos are continually
marauding the neighbourhood like invading B52 bombers, as often as not with
a couple of intercepting Torresian Crows sent up to escort them out of
sensitive air-space.
Banded Lapwings have been hard to find for a month or so now, but three
turned up yesterday in a field nearby, and we still have a regular Spotted
Harrier appearing most days.
It continues to be a good times for crakes. A French visitor was beside
himself with excitement the other day to see seven or eight "Byons" at one
location - he's been searching for them in France for years.
And a great sight coming down Duck Creek Road from O'Reilly's the other day.
A Painted Button-quail walked across the track in front of us with three
youngsters in tow - the tiniest little feathery dots of creatures I've ever
seen!
