Hi
I'm just wondering if anyone out there in the Brisbane area has any
knowledge of, or interest in, the area in Murarrie where the abattoirs used
to be? The area consists of 3 'ponds' lying in rough ground beside Bulimba
creek off Lytton Rd just before Doboy bridge and almost opposite the Hemmant
Recreation reserve where the egret colony used to be. (That's another story
I'd like to hear too - where have all the egrets gone?)
This ponded area is really interesting, but appears to have declined
in recent years. I remember seeing a greater variety of species 15 years ago
when I first visited and the abattoirs were still in production. Now the
Pied Stilts, Black fronted Dotterels, Reed warblers, Grassbirds etc are
still there, but the only duck I have seen this year are two types of Teal
and the Stilts aren't breeding. There are also white stakes in the ground
which always bodes ill and I wonderd if anyone out there knows of any plans
for the area?
It seems a shame as it would be so easy to conserve the area and it
has a real 'potential' feel. I always expect the unexpected and was very
pleased a few weeks ago to see 2 pairs of Red kneed Dotterels and, overhead,
a white breasted Sea Eagle. There is almost always a few Sharp Tailed Sands
and a solitary Marsh sand. I could just imagine some hedges/natural fences
being built along the edges of the ponds and, with a bit of care, a really
excellent birding spot created - providing conditions for several sp to
breed and somewhere for migrants to overnight or shelter.

Anyone any suggestions/info/experience of this spot?
