Summary: last seen feeding at a different part of the swamp
around 6.30 pm when the "grubby pool" was much deeper -
green plastic bag etc. gone?
To continue the story after my first ever sighting of this
species, thanks to Joy.
I returned from the Birds Australia library* after a heavy
shower at 3.15 pm (DST) and the Painted Snipe was on the mud
on the west side of the "grubby pool". She pottered around
and then stayed still, showing off a brilliant white "V" on
her front. Then suddenly at 3.42 she flew about 80m west in
to the lower, greener rushes/grasses, about 20 seconds
before another heavy shower arrived.
Went birding and got soaked again and then spotted her at
about 6pm in a pool by cumbungi (? - bulrushes/reed mace)
but mainly surrounded by the shorter, greener veg. This can
be seen from the made path which passes the grubby pool to
the east. You go to about 50m past the cricket nets and look
west to the left hand end of the tallest swamp vegetation.
Meanwhile all the muddy margins of the grubby pool had
become submerged, all the tennis balls had vanished and the
incoming water had changed the shape for the dead rushes
where the bird had been. These are directly compass south
of the Ironbark with the Frogmouth nest.
