Marsh Sandpipers and Buff-banded Rails

Dear All,

Chris Tzaros' (G'day Chris) Twitchathon sussing - particularly the two
Buff-banded Rails - reminded me to fire-off a thought emanating (partly, anyway)
from my own sussing. People are noting influxes of White-winged Trillers and
Rufous Songlarks to southeastern Australia (which I hadn't really noticed around
Swan Hill (NW Vic), for example) - I suspect we could add Buff-banded Rail and
Marsh Sandpiper to the list. In the last two weeks, I have seen Buff-banded
Rail at Lake Cowal (near West Wyalong, NSW), Banyule Flats (suburban Melbourne,
2 birds), and near Stanhope (central Vic). I can't recall having seen any in
the last few years, despite repeated visits to all the aforementioned localities
(and many others), albeit without looking for them as such. I have seen
numerous Marsh Sandpipers in the last few years, but recent numbers at Lake
Cowal and several locations around Swan Hill are the highest I've ever seen (in
many visits over the last 20 years). They seem to be regular at Bendigo
(central Vic.) sewage farm at the moment, but I don't think I've ever seen them
there before in 20 or so visits over the years.

What do others reckon?

Cheers,

Paul Peake.
