I took a day off work today and went Atlassing with a ranger from
Cunninghams Gap - for a couple of kays along the ridge between Mt Devlin
and Bare Rock [28 01, 152 21].
Some of the little treats included a crested shrike tit, yellow tufted
honeyeaters, a pair of nesting white throated treecreepers and a bush
turkey up a tree [I've atlassed very few turkeys away from picnic
grounds]. We also heard an alberts lyrebird.
We saw some more of the multi trunked tree ferns - again not far from
the edge of the fire zone, so we thought fire might be a contributing
factor. We also say some very large braided vines [up to a dozen or
more strands in some, and 30-40 cm in diameter], an 8 metre tree fern
and a 30 metre piccabeen.
Interestingly, we saw quite a few yellow throated scrub wrens, bassian
thrushes and a brown cuckoo dove out in open [schlerophyll] country that
had been burnt about a year ago. [Normally these species are in the
rainforest, but these were ~ 300 metres from the rainforest].
Overall, only one eastern yellow robin, one logrunner and one pigeon
seen on the walk.
Regards, Laurie.
