I can't answer Syd's question but I've seen another piece of White-faced Heron behaviour which is not in the Reader's Digest book. Once I've seen one raise and curve its wings to form an umbrella/sun-shade as it was hunting along a shallow seashore. A heron found in Florida, USA (green heron?) does this often - I've seen it on the TV. Presumably it eliminates reflection from the water surface.
