TIM FLANNERY TO SPEAK AT INAUGURAL NORMAN WETTENHALL MEMORIAL LECTURE
Well known author, palaeontologist and Director of the South Australian
Museum, Dr Tim Flannery, is to give the inaugural Norman Wettenhall
Memorial Lecture at Melbourne's new Museum on the evening of the Wednesday
14 November, 2001.
Like Norman Wettenhall, Tim Flannery is a committed environmentalist who
believes that groups of people, banding together at the community level,
stand as the greatest force for securing a bountiful and biodiverse future.
Norman and Tim share another bond, one which makes Tim a particularly apt
choice as inaugural speaker. Tim credits Norman - in his role as
paediatrician - for saving his life as a child.
Convenor of the lecture series is the Norman Wettenhall Foundation in
association with the Trust for Nature and Birds Australia. An environmental
organisation, the Norman Wettenhall Foundation is focused on maintaining
the vitality and diversity of the Australian natural living environment,
with a particular emphasis on advancing the interests of native birds.
Author of such acclaimed books as The Future Eaters and, most recently, The
Eternal Frontier, Dr Flannery has a reputation for speaking as
entertainingly as he writes. To ensure a lively lecture, the trustees of
the Foundation have set a challenging topic: -
How does Dr Flannery, as an evolutionary scientist, believe that human
beings can rise above the selfish gene imperative to collaborate in
conserving the earth as home not just for ourselves, but for as wide a
range of species as possible?
The choice of the venue is not without significance. Not only did Norman
Wettenhall serve for a long period as Chairman of the Trust for Nature and
as President of RAOU (now Birds Australia). He was also a board member of
Council of the Museum Victoria and played a key role in the new Museum's
development.
As an evening lecture, the aim is to commence at 5.45 p.m. with drinks and
nibbles in the foyer of the ICE Theatre, with the lecture taking place
between 6.30-7.30 p.m. The lecture attendance cost is $30 per head.
We are sure Dr Flannery, as the first lecturer, will set a high standard
and a benchmark for what we hope will become a highlight on the annual
calendar for those interested in environmental issues.
