Hello birdos,
On the subject of Red-lored Whistlers and Round Hill Nature Reserve, it
should be remembered that people visiting nature reserves (including Round
Hill) should seek permission from the responsible NSW National Parks and
Wildlife Service Region, in this case Griffith Office. Nature Reserves are
only set aside for conservation purposes and visitation is generally by
arrangement.
The numbers of people visiting Round Hill exceeds the number that contact
NPWS beforehand. It can lead to management problems, for example if there
is a fire or emergency on the reserve, NPWS may not know who is on the
reserve at the time. It also helps to get advice on the best places to camp
to minimise damage to the environment and to scientific research sites
which are found on the reserve.
As long as the NPWS is contacted beforehand and notified of whereabouts you
want to go you are more than welcome to look in other parts of Round Hill
and Nombinnie Nature Reserves. If the Red-loreds are as restricted as the
current spread of records indicates then they are in serious trouble.
However lack of serious survey effort in places other than the wheatpaddock
could be responsible for this. Without people looking we just don't know.
For Round Hill and Nombinnie Nature Reserves the ranger responsible is
David Egan who can be contacted at Griffith NPWS on 02 69668100. For other
nature reserves, you just need to call the closest National Parks office
and ask for the ranger who is responsible for the reserve you wish to visit.
Cheers and happy NR birdwatching,
Mick Todd
