Yes, they do have powerful beaks. A few years ago our neighbours had a Swamp Hen which they raised from a chick, and it was very territorial and fearless. After it removed a piece of flesh from a stock agent's leg, that gentleman was very wary of it, and on several occasions thereafter he was forced to vault over the fence to escape its unwelcome attention. Poor thing came to a sad end eventually under the wheel of a reversing car. Duncan Fraser.
