I missed the post about the use of altimeters but thought my recent experiences
of interest to people.
As part of securing my first high quality binoculars last year, the staff at
the Birding Shop in Hawthorn gave me a Minox air pressure, altitude,
temperature, chill factor and wind speed device as well. This nifty little tool
enables me to actually 'predict' the weather and see the direction of pressure
changes up to 16 hours previously (in 4 hour increments). Best of all, one can
set the altitude from a known reference (eg. sea level or a hill top). This
means you can have a much more reliable idea of what's happening with
atmospheric pressure changes.
