Apropos of Merrilyn's reply to Lawrie's message about Fan-tailed Cuckoos, which was sent before I rejoined the list last night, I was surprised by the overall lack of cuckoos on our trip through Qld and NE NSW during September/ early October.  We heard Fan-tailed Cuckoos more often than any other species, and had a couple of records each of Shining Bronze, Horsfield's Bronze and Brush, with single records of Little Bronze and Channel-billed (both new ticks for me).  We did not hear or see a pallid Cuckoo in the whole five weeks, nor did we get Black-eared or a Koel.  I would have expected to have picked up more records over the period than that.  So maybe the Pallids all moved south early, and the Fan-tails are dallying up north for some reason.
