Just back from a pleasant weekend around the Chilterns and Albury wetlands.
Whilst at the Cyanide Dam in the Chilterns {N.Victoria,} spotted a large, fast-asleep Koala in the crook of a tree next to the dam. A number of birds were landing on the Koala and generally fluttering around the snoozing creature. Initially puzzled, my wife and I realised that the birds - Brown-headed Honeyeaters - were pulling fur from the Koala, which only re-acted when a bird yanked fur from it's ear, but then fell back asleep. I read that some species line their nests with fur, but hadn't thought they brazenly wrenched it from poor sleeping Koalas!!
