The message from Dave Beswick questions the wisdom and morality of multiple
banding small waders such as Red-necked Stints. How many Red-necked Stints
are retrapped with triple leg flags and metal bands in following seasons? Not
many I am willing to bet. How many of the banded birds never make the
following season? Not many would be a safe bet. It is simply not known and
quoting vague and biased northern hemisphere research cuts no ice. It is
probable that most of the small multiple banded waders never make it.
These people (the banders) are deluding themselves about the importance of
their banding data. A site is important if it is used by waders and if we know
that a bird was banded at Altona or Broome, it makes very little difference.
Don't worry about the passion, find some compassion and stop banding these
small waders. How much evidence do you people want? If Red-necked Stints are
declining, you should not be touching them.
