If anyone is visiting Capertee Valley, keep your eyes and ears open for
Gilbert's Whistlers. They are not supposed to be here, but there have been
some definite sightings, perhaps all of the same bird? Or are there more?
Last October 2000 I tape recorded the song of a male Gilbert's Whistler near
the Glen Davis Road, about 19 km E of Capertee and I also had a good look at
the bird. Now again this year, September 14 - 15 2001, I have been hearing
brief snatches of the song of a Gilbert's Whistler, about 2 km W of my
original sighting. I haven't actually spotted the bird yet but I am very
confident of the ID. Last year in early August David Geering saw a male
Gilbert's Whistler in Capertee Valley, about 15 km W of my own sightings.
Rufous Whistlers are presently conspicuous by their absence, although I did
hear one call briefly the other day. No doubt they will soon arrive.
So if you are in Capertee Valley and you think you are hearing a Rufous
Whistler, double check this because it might be a Gilbert's Whistler! And
if you think you have seen a female Golden Whistler, check again, because it
might be a female Gilbert's Whistler!
