Yesterday (Sunday 9/9/01) I made a quick trip to the Northlakes housing
development site to take some 'snaps' of the birdhide I mentioned in a recent
posting.
I will be displaying the pictures on a web-page soon for the benefit of anyone
interested.
Northlakes is a typical housing development in the 'suburb' of Mango Hill north
of Brisbane.
It can be found at about L7 on UBD Refidex Map 89. A recent edition would be
best.
I may have to change my attitude to this sort of development in light of this
particular visit.
In the small man-made pond behind the birdhide I was surprised to see 2 (!!)
Baillon's Crakes at 2:00 o'clock in the afternoon!!
Also 2 Black-fronted Dotterels.
One of the crakes was foraging in the reeds a matter of a few meters from the
wooden bridge crossing the pond.
I was able to get some reasonable video footage; unfortunately I ran out of tape
before it came right out into the open.
Definitely the best views I have ever had of this species.
This looks like a good spot for anyone wishing to try for this species and who
has easy access to this location.
Park in the car park at the site office (the large building next to the lake)
and follow the path that starts between the bottle tree and the small weather
station.
Head for the rear of the birdhide; the path will take you there.
Stand on the wooden bridge behind the birdhide and look in both directions.
With a little bit of luck you may see a crake around the edges or in the middle.
