Around 8am this-morning (Saturday, 8 September) our first Channel-billed
Cuckoo for the new spring flew over Abberton. (South-east Queensland, 27º
34' 21" S, 152º 08' 21" E).
First spotted by Tim Kastelle and Nancy Pachana who were walking in the
garden.
About 30 minutes later, Eileen heard our first returning Sacred Kingfisher,
which turned up shortly after in a tree close by, before gliding past the
breakfast table. An uplifting morning, with the Sacred Kingfisher, Rainbow
Bee-eaters, Azure Kingfishers (three together yesterday) and various
fairy-wrens all flashing their colours in front of us.
We lose Sacred Kingfishers for the winter months, though they're still
around in Brisbane and on the coast. Likewise Varied Triller, saw one in
Redwood Park on the Toowoomba escarpment yesterday, but we've never had a
winter Varied or White-winged Triller at Abberton in the winter.
As I write, I can hear more Channel-bills calling to the west, not their
full exuberant mad yelling yet, just the occasional raucous comment.
