Hi Birders,
Amanda Reitzin reported a mixed group
of Red-rumped Parrots in Lyons Park, Rose Bay in Sydney's eastern suburbs and
asks whether this is unusual. The answer is no, it is not unusual for Red-rumps
to occur at Rose Bay, for when I was preparing the article "Birds of Sydney
Harbour National Park,NSW" 1986 Aust. Birds 20, 65-81
I noted that they were regularly sighted at Lyons Park & Neilsen Park (part
of Sydney Harbour NP) and they were resident in nearby Centennial Park. The
largest group in Sydney live in the Meadow Bank area where the local Council
through the efforts of NSWFOC member Tom Kelsey, have erected nesting boxes for
their use and this effort has been successful. Another group nest in the old
growth woodland in the now Silverwater NR near the Homebush Bay Olympic Park
& Bicentennial Parks.
It is interesting to note that in Ern Hoskin's book
"Birds of Sydney" 1991pp he mentions that Red-rumped Parrots were not recorded
by A.J. North in his County of Cumberland list in 1888, or in his Nests and
Eggs in 1898. It is presumed that the original birds were avairy
escapees and by the 1920s were resident in Centennial Park from where they have
spread throughout the City.
