Hi Jon,
     You may wish to check the Action Plan for Australian Birds 2000 at the
following address.  It has a good potted summary of the reason various birds are
threatened, what needs to be done and how much cash/work is required to address
the conservation of each species.  Gouldian Finch is towards the end (p. 602 in
my hard copy).
