At Easter1999 I saw two pairs of Australian Shovellers on one
of the lagoons on Roebuck Plains with a group from the BBO.
There is no conceivable doubt that they were shovellers, I
watched them for at least half an hour, and they didn't have long tails.
They should be on the BBO list for that day. George Swan last year said he
had never seen them in the Kimberley.
There is no record of any shovellers (Australian or Northern) on the Broome
bird list which I maintain on their behalf. The Broome Bird Observatory is
very keen on adding birds to their list, so I am exceptionally surprised
that they haven't asked me to add it to the list.
I will be in Broome in late September / October so I will check with them
(and George Swann) about the sighting.
PS : I am starting to build the web pages for Birds Australia WA, and the
BBO and Eyre Bird Observatory. The addresses should be :
http://members.starwon.com.au/~birdswa
http://members.starwon.com.au/~birdswa/bbo
http://members.starwon.com.au/~birdswa/ebo
The first pass should be up and running by mid September. There is a small
chance that they will change ISPs, or get their own domain name. When the
sites are available I will send another message to birding-aus, but in the
meantime you can start looking at the information. The main aim is to put
the full list (about 50) of country birding brochures online. There are
three there already for Lancelin, Donnybrook and Norseman.
