Hello All
A trip last week to areas around Fountainhead and Douglas River (between
Darwin and Pine Creek) turned up some interesting birds. At one creek
Michael and I spotted two Broad-billed Flycatchers and a Rufous Fantail
while sailing overhead was a Grey Falcon.
We also discovered Gouldian Finches in the Fountainhead/Hayes Creek area,
a flock of about twenty, mostly juveniles with three or four Black-headed
adults, moving around with Chestnut-breasted Mannikins. An ex-illegal
trapper told Hilary Thompson years ago that a red-headed population
existed in the area. Yet while working on various biological surveys
around there from 1988-91 I found only one Gouldian, a black-headed adult
male. This bird was at Frances Creek mine site, nearer Pine Creek.
Now to another topic. Back in the late 1980's Hilary Thompson and I
researched and wrote an Annotated List of Birds of the Top End. Despite
not being published this work quoted widely in HANZAAB.
The reason we didn't publish is that one of those to whom we gave a copy
for comment, plagiarised the whole lot and consequently we weren't
prepared to spend money on putting it to print. We've since found out
that several copies were made as well, and handed out to various
birdwatchers. Not a great inducement to others considering putting their
knowledge into print, and certainly not a great advertisement for
recruitment.
I remind those who have copies of our Annotated LIst that Hilary and I
own copyright and that their copies are illegal.
If I had the time and resources I'd love to write a paper on the
sociology of birdwatching. It would be a shocker!
