This winter I have been looking out for the two different races of Striated
Pardalotes around Canberra.
The red-tipped (resident) birds seem to be found in their usual haunts
(woodland remnants and well-treed areas with natives) in small groups,
whereas the yellow-tipped (Tasmanian) birds seem to be found in more open
and disturbed areas in larger groups. I think that the call of the migratory
birds does seem to be louder and more strident than that of the other race,
which I suppose would be an advantage in a migratory sub-species.
