I don't like doing 2 ha - 20 min surveys as there are many sites where
it takes up to an hour to find all the birds in a 2 ha site. The large,
obvious birds are easily located in 5-10 mins, but the small shy types
are a different bag of feathers [to link to another thread].
What I like about the 5km area searches is that if you see or hear
anything while you are filling in your list, you don't have to worry
whether or not it is in your survey area.
That said, my question for BA, is which type of error are they more
concerned about: over-representation or under-representation?
Is the purpose of the atlas to determine the presence or absence of
species?
There are many areas [within a 10 min block] where I could go atlassing
where I know I would find very few species - due to the efforts of
private landholders. Alternatively, within the same blocks there are
also local hotspots - woodland patches, creeklines, dams etc - where
there are significantly more species.
