On Saturday, Chris Tzaros and I were strolling around the
Toolangi/Murrundindi area of the Central Highlands near Melbourne. In one
area of riparian forest (a strip left beside a big clear-fell coupe), we
became aware of a strange tapping sound - lots of it. It turned out to be a
big flock of Striated Pardalotes (and a few Spotted) lerping. The sound of
the birds pecking lerps from leaves was quite audible, and with 30+ of them
doing it in a small area was quite an interesting percussive effect. The
other thing of interest was that the Striated Pardalotes were of the
migratory Tasmanian form - the Yellow-tipped Pardalote _Pardalotus striatus
striatus_.

Has anyone else had the pleasure of hearing the massed percussion of feeding
pardalotes? .... and, how many others have noticed Yellow-tipped Pardalotes
on the mainland this winter, and where?

L.

PS: Other birds reciorded were as follows. Species richness low, but
enjoyment high - despite the Pilotbirds refusing to show themselves to
