Hi Everyone,
A wader count along the Cairns Esplanade, (Far North Queensland), this
morning produced few species but higher numbers of G-T Tattlers & G. Knots
than was expected for this time of year. Species and numbers are listed at
the end.
A female Red-backed Kingfisher was also seen on our way home, unusual to see
them
in Cairns. Several have been reported on the Atherton Tableland, one was on
the coast at Euramo south of Tully and another in one of Cairns northern
beach suburbs. Chris Dahlberg reported his 4th Red-backed Kingfisher in 12
years at the Daintree, so it looks like this year is unusual in the number
of sightings on the coast in this region. A Blue-winged Kookaburra was
reported by Ian Cowan in one of Cairns northern suburbs, again unusual.
There has been a family of blue wings in Little Street, Cairns (near
Centenary Lakes, Botanic Gardens) for many years but these are the only ones
we know about in Cairns. The cooler weather of late has brought a few
species down from higher altitudes to the coast in Cairns, including Wompoo
Fruit-Dove, Bridled Honeyeater and Yellow-breasted Boatbill. Rufous Fantails
and Grey Fantails still appear to be passing through.
