Hi all,
from my 1998 Australia holidays, I came back with an unsolved observation
of a (most probably) godwit which I could not specify though I tried my
very best with the Pizzey & Knight guide. The location was a saltwater
course at Lakes Entrance, VIC. On a sandbank, there was a flock of approx.
20 waders which were most apparently godwits. What puzzled me was that in
flight, they did not show any white band or wedge on their tail / back /
rump (which would be typical for the obviously common Black-tailed Godwit
or Bar-tailed Godwit), but had a rather uniform pattern of washed-out
grey-white spots like the pattern of the upper wings. This reminded me of
the North-American Marbled Godwit (Limosa fedoa) which cannot be expected
in Australia. The Asian Dowitcher may be another possibility, but according
to a recent paper I read the bird is very rare in southern Australia and is
only found casually as single birds. Can anyone help me??? Looking forward
to hearing from you!!!
Thank you and many greetings to beautiful Australia,
Wolf Eisfeld, Duesseldorf, Germany.
