Subject: Olive Whistler at Glenelg NP
Steve Clark's observation of an Olive Whistler in his recent posting is of some
significance.
The 'Action Plan for Australian Birds - 2000' (Garnett and Crowley 2000)
classified this form of the species (Pachycephala olivacea hesperus) as
?Near
Threatened? and mentions that habitat clearance has probably halved the
subspecies? distribution. The previously continuous population from South
Australia to the Glenelg area in Victoria is now isolated into separate
populations ie. birds near Port Fairy may now be isolated from those in SA.
Also, there have been only two records of the species breeding in the Atlas of
Victorian Wildlife. Schodde and Mason (1999, p. 435) show the distribution of
each subspecies across Australia. The Glenelg form is clearly isolated from
other populatiuons in se Australia.
