Good eye,
I'm not too sure if Canberra birders take Gang
Gangs for granted during winter, but anyone else at least passing through in the
next few days - and wanting to pay a little visit to a family of Gang Gang
cockatoos - could pop in to the little park adjacent to Red Hill Primary school,
at the corner of Monaro Cres and Nuyts St.
There you should find a family with mum, dad and
2 boys, and occasionally an uncle joins them - munching their way through a row
of 5 hawthorn trees, laden with berries but leaves all shed. Careful
though, you can walk right up and chat with
them, but if spooked they fly off in the usual low flight pattern, right across
the nearby road which can be busy at times. They still had 3 trees to go as of
Monday, and are clearing about 1 a day. They are not wasteful though, as they
even reach down to clip off lower stalks holding just a few dry old berries, and
then picking the berries from the clutched stalk - like eating a
toffy-apples!
One of the imm. males likes
to show off his acrobatics from time to time, hanging with wings spread from
nearby trees above your head.
Regards
