I have seen a photograph of a large heap of dead small migratory birds
which had been attracted to a lighthouse in foggy weather and had then
been dazzled and flown into the windows. I don't remember whether in
Europe or USA. I believe the problem was solved to some extent by
putting up racks of baffles around the shaft of the tower so the birds
flew into some shade and then could perch on the baffles.
Many of the birds were only stunned but were then killed after falling
to the ground by cats, weasels and other mammalian predators.
I'll see if I can find the book this was in.
