Using Steve Anyon-Smith's excellent little book, Birdwatching in Royal &
Heathcote National Parks we walked along Site 13 the Pipeline trail, in
Heathcote NP, NSW.
Highlights were 120+ Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos in one swirling noisy
flock.
Rock Warblers where Steve said they would be, under the pipeline
Scarlet honeyeaters (c10)feeding in Banksia Ericifolia at eye level.
We saw 23 species altogether on a very nice walk. That doesn't sound many
but we had birds non stop the whole day. Mostly Red wattlebirds,
Yellow-faced Honeyeaters, White-naped Honeyeaters, Little Wattlebirds, &
Yellow-tufted Honeyeaters.
My first impression of the book is it is an excellent aid for visitors to
the area and especially helpful for beginners who want to find their own new
birds. Steve has separated the walks into habitats more or less. Any
beginner who could understand subtle habitat change could learn a lot from
this little book. We look forward to going on all the walks.
