Wungong is a Triple A birding site, with Triple A access. About
30km southeast of Perth, near Armadale, Admiral Rd goes right off the Albany
Highway and winds down to a carpark below Wungong Dam. In and within cooee
of the carpark are all sorts of birds, with more along the track that
crisscrosses the creek downstream through the gorge.
Over a late afternoon and the next morning we picked up seven
"endemics", Long-billed Black Cockatoo, Western Rosella, Red-winged
Fairywren, Western Thornbill, Western Spinebill, White-breasted Robin and
Red-eared Firetail.
Three introductions were Laughing Kookaburra, Laughing Turtledove
and Peafowl- (a tame peacock in the carpark).
Twenty plus others included Red-tailed Black Cockatoo, 28 parrot,
Common Bronzewing, Splendid Fairywren, Western Gerygone, Scarlet Robin,
Golden Whistler,
White-naped and New Holland Honeyeater, Inland Thornbill, Spotted and
Striated Pardalote, White-browed Scrubwren.
Most spp. were in trees and shrubs in the carpark or above, behind ,
below or over the road from it. The Rosellas and Firetail were downstream a
km or so, with many others of the above as well. Over 90 spp. have been
recorded, so we missed a few!
About 200 Black Cockatoos roosted upstream from the carpark in the
evening, only Long-billed could be seen in the scope.
