I examined a Brown Quail found dead in a fence today.  Like Mike Carter I found the white shaft-streaks to be bolder than shown in Pizzey or Simpson and Day, but similar to the illustration in Cayley (the large edition).
 
This species was not recorded in Central Australia in Atlas 1, but there have been several reliable reports of it over the last year or so. 
It appears to have dramatically increased its range in response the good seasons.  Previously identification was not a problem when it was "known" that only Stubble Quail occurred here, now it is an issue.
