I examined a Brown Quail found dead in a fence
today. Like Mike Carter I found the white shaft-streaks to be bolder than
shown in Pizzey or Simpson and Day, but similar to the illustration in Cayley
(the large edition).
This species was not recorded in Central Australia
in Atlas 1, but there have been several reliable reports of it over the last
year or so.
It appears to have dramatically increased its range
in response the good seasons. Previously identification was not a problem
when it was "known" that only Stubble Quail occurred here, now it is an
issue.
