There is an 'official' list of species codes for all Australian verterbrate
species (above frogs) maintained by the ABRS, which is a section of
Environment Australia. The bird codes are the same as the ABBBS banding
codes with a zero added at the start. The ABBBS codes are also used by the
Atlas, and appear in Simpson & Day (under the map I think). Unfortunately
CAVS hasn't been updated for a few years, but ABBBS has created codes for
new pecies.

Subject: [BIRDING-AUS] Four letter codes for Oz birds??
Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 06:15:14 -0700 (PDT)
I have been loooking at streamlining my atlasing data
while in the field using a PDA with data entry via
some sort of bird code to cut down on the amount of
writing.
I have been doing a bit research and found some 4
letter banding codes for US birds and was wondering if
there has been a similar system developed for oz
birds.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
