G'Day Phil and all others interested in this subject

As I have not been a current member of (RAOU) Birds Australia for about
20 years, I wish to make some impartial comments about this subject.
There appears to be a hidden agenda buried deeply into the quoted
correspondence from the USA! The production of a strictly scientific
journal may be more relevant to the interest of an overseas observer but
active involvement in bird conservation and field research is much more
important to me as an Australian resident interested in birds.

Compared to the days when country membership of the RAOU meant little
more than to receive a journal filled with information about comparative
embryo weights of emu eggs or something similar, the evolution of Birds
Australia into private conservation management through the acquisition
of Gluepot and Newhaven and its ongoing contribution to Australia's
ornithological field research ensures the relevance of this organization
to me.

Birds Australia should be encouraged in every way to keep up this
excellent work and while there is an undisputed need to maintain a
scientific journal, it should be treated as a distinct function and not
used as a benchmark to judge the performance of the organization.

As a result of this thread and its timely reminder about the importance
to support Birds Australia, I have decided forthwith to renew my
membership again.

Regards

Ian May
