Memorable sightings on recent trip to the Macquarie Marshes - north west NSW
6 Ground Cockoo-shrikes in the front paddock of Willie Retreat near the gate
on one of the early morning walks, and a Little Cuckoo-shrike in dark phase,
a most interesting looking bird. Black-chinned and Beautiful-firetails about
2 feet away at the Retreat drinking from a puddle in the early morning sun.
White-winged wrens, Blue Bonnets, Red-wings, Ringnecks
In the Nature Reserve/marshes, Glossy Ibis, Spoonbills, Shelduck,
Pink-eared, Shoveller, Spotted Crake, Brolga, Owlet Nightjar and all the
regulars.
Brolga at Monkeygar, no Bittern, Buff-banded Rail. Night Herons at the
Terrigal, new observation platform great.
Dusky Woodswallows clumping on a tree at dusk (just like on Wingspan) when
we were practicing our barking for the owl, no owl.
And for me best trip memories, Alice Geering (aged 7) spotting a female
Red-capped Robin and identifying it before all the "oldies" even had their
binos on it and wonderful long views of a White-browed Woodswallow posing on
an old Red Gum, such a beautiful bird.
