We saw plumheads from the verandah at Abberton this-morning. They have been
at quite a few different locations in the valley over the last month or so,
but it's more than 12 months since we had them here. There's certainly
plenty of seeding material to keep them going for some time.
A more unusual visitor for us, also this-morning, was a male Varied Triller.
White-winged Trillers have bred here and are regular, especially in the
spring and summer, but the Varied Triller seems to be more a bird of the
forests than of the more open environment, and this was only our second
record for Abberton. Our records show that the more 'forest' birds are
beginning to turn up more regularly which is very encouraging given the
revegetation we've been undertaking over the last several years.
It is altogether an idyllic autumn morning. We had planned to spend the day
up at Mt Glorious, but we just couldn't get away from the breakfast table.
Three coloured male Red-backed Fairywrens together - spectacular, Speckled
Warbler, Cockatiels, Golden and Rufuous Whistlers, Double-barred, Zebra and
Red-browed Finches, Yellow Thornbills, and so on, and so on - plus the
plumheads and the Varies Triller.
By the time we got round to thinking about going out, it was 10.30am - so
we're still here. Another plan bites the dust!
