Hello All,

This morning, 9:00 am, 12/04/2001, the South Island pied Oystercatcher (SIPO)
was observed at Crockatt Park, Woody point.

For those who have just tuned in, Woody Point is on the Redcliffe Peninsula just
north of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

Crockett Park is marked on Brisbane UBD Refidex Map 91 at N18.
This is the location of my original sighting of SIPO at Woody Point.
Crockatt Park is 200 to 300 meters north of the Woody Point Jetty.
Unfortunately this area is also frequented by another species of animal that can
make life difficult for birds and birdwatchers.
This species is probably a sub-species of the human race - although DNA testing
might prove interesting - and is characterised by the habit of encouraging their
pet dogs to charge at flocks of birds on the beach.

I would advise anyone encountering these creatures to advise them of their
doubtful heritage and explain to them in plain language how to behave in public
areas.

I have already set a precedent.

Anyone visiting this area in an attempt to find the SIPO over the long weekend
should be prepared for large numbers of people using this area for 'leisure'
activities.
The area is actually a very pleasant spot for a day at the sea-side and for a
bit of birdwatching so please don't be put off by the above.

The other likely SIPO location is the area of the boat-ramp in Pelican Park a
couple of kilometers west of Crockatt Park.
See UBD REfidex Map 91, F18.
Look on the rock-wall on the seaward side of the boat ramp.
The information kiosk in the park now has a poster showing the SIPO and
information on how to pick it from the (Australian) Pied Oystercatchers.
If the particular attendant on duty doen't know what you are talking about have
a look around the room, the poster should be 'blu-tac-ed' to the front of the
counter.

Good luck,

Bob Inglis
