Needletail obs in Vic Central Highlands.
I've been saving these for a rainy day.

19 Feb 01 at 9.25 am: 3 Needletails, Toolangi State Forest, 37 29 01S,
145 30 48E, over wet forest regrown after logging in 1976, sunny, no
cloud, calm, mild

19 Feb 01 at 11.50 am to midday: 9 Needletails, Black Range State
Forest, 37 27 40S, 145 36 56E, over wet forest regrown after logging in
1996, sunny, 10% thin cloud, light wind, warm

27 Feb 01 at 11.55 am: 5 Needletails, Toolangi State Forest, 37 30 56S,
145 34 33E, over wet forest regrown after logging in 1988, sunny, no
cloud, calm, mild.

2 March 01 from 9.55 to 10.25 am: 6 Needletails, Toolangi State Forest,
37 30 58S, 145 33 25E, over wet forest regrown after logging in 1997,
sunny, no cloud, light wind, mild.

3 March 01 at 2.35 pm: 6 Needletails with 6 Tree Martins (an hour later
0 WTN and 20 TM), Toolangi State Forest, 1996 wet forest regrowth after
logging, sunny, 20% cloud, calm, warm and humid.

5 March 01 The man working in the O'Shannassy Water Catchment Area fire
tower saw 1000 White-throated Needletails from the tower (yes, one
thousand). They were flying over a wide area and sometimes came very
close to him. He sees them regularly and fills in atlas forms. (Just a
bit of a contrast with the small numbers that I usually see from the
ground!)

13 March 01 at 6.30 pm: 2 Needletails, Toolangi State Forest, 37 33 36S,
145 34 14E, 1985 wet forest regrowth after logging, weak sun approaching
sunset, 15% thin cloud, calm on the ground but clouds moving past quite
fast, cool and becoming cooler.

That could be all the WTNs I see for the season. Autumn is here. We've
had a lot of wonderful rain the past few days or so and the wet forests
of the Central Highlands have been washed clean again after an extremely
dry dusty summer.

Cheers,
Merrilyn.
