Michael Todd's comments about mannikins feeding on algae reminded me of an observation at Cumberland Dam (Georgetown, FNQ) a few Easters ago when the Cairns Nats group watched Pictorella Mannikins feeding for over 30 minutes on algal growth on the rocks in the pool below the dam wall. We wondered then if they were feeding on insects but decided they were definitely eating the algae. None of the other finches coming in to drink made any attempt to "copy" the mannikins.
