In fact, in this context, 'zirkeln' doesn't really
mean 'to circle', but
rather 'to measure'. Makes more sense, doesn't it.

And it is, of course, no coincidence that these German
terms are used, since
Germans were among the first to study avian ethology -
Lorenz, etc. Another
such interesting term is 'Zugunruhe' (English-speaking
people shouldn't even
try to pronounce this:-)), which refers to the typical
restlessness of birds
just prior to migration.

Thinking about it some more, "zirkeln" kind of makes
sense - after a
spot
of "Zirkeln", the marks left in the bark by the
scrubwren in the bark
might be circles (zirkeln.)

Why they didn't just saying "prying movements" in the
first place is
beyond me...
