Hello all,
I had intended to leave this topic behind me having had my say but a recent
comment on this forum has prompted me to make one last (from me) submission.
Anne Green
(Atriplex Services: "Working With Nature" Environmental Consultants, Growers of
native Australian plants, educators.)
Said the following, Mon 26 Feb 2001:
"Congratulations, Jill, on your work, your thorough thinking-through of the
issues, open-mindedness when dealing with non-birders and birders alike and,
most importantly on this forum, your tolerance and persistent good manners in
the face of a somewhat unpleasant public attack on your work and your ethics.
There should be more of you!"
I assume this is directed at me as I seem to be the only one who has made any
comment on Jill Denning's postings on this topic other than those with simple
statements of congratulations.
The fact that Anne Green has chosen to be offended by my comments is quite
interesting to me.
I suggest, Anne, that you read my posting again and this time use some of that
open-mindedness, thorough thinking-through and tolerance that you mentioned
above.
At no stage have I questioned Jill Denning's ethics.
I have not questioned her effort or her desire to do something positive in a
very negative situation.
I have not questioned her motives in this or any other of the projects that she
is involved in.
(I would suggest, though, that it will not be possible to draw definite
conclusions from her one year study of the terns at Caloundra. However, that one
year of study will be a very good starting point.)
What I have questioned is the effectiveness and the viability of the outcome
that Jill believes she has achieved in her collaboration with the developer on
the Dux Creek project.
I did this publicly because it was obvious to me that Jill introduced this topic
on this forum to generate a public discussion.
She obviously wanted to get some feed-back on what was happening and I'm sure
she would have been somewhat disappointed if the only response she got was a
series of platitudes.
I believe my submission was welcomed by Jill and gave her the opportunity to
expand on the topic and thus provide us all with a deal more information to
ponder.
Her posting of 20 Feb 2001 seemed to confirm that.
I get a great deal of pleasure out of Jill's postings to Birding-Aus.
Her postings are always interesting and eminently readable.
They are what I believe this forum should be all about.
That is why I have reacted to what she has had to say on more than one occasion
both directly and in public.
It is a delight to participate in a debate with someone who knows the rules and
also enjoys the occasion.
I questioned the virtues of Capitalism but I did not question Jill's right to be
a Capitalist.
However, my experience in life suggests to me that it would be extremely
difficult to be
a dedicated Capitalist and an Environmentalist at the same time.
I feel such a person would have many sleepless nights!
I believe that the motivation and incentive that Capitalism generates comes from
promoting greed.
Perhaps someone would like to convince me otherwise?
Good birding,
Bob Inglis.
