Dear Birding-Ausers,
Just a couple of interesting local sightings here in Bundaberg.
3 Glossy Black Cockatoos in casuarinas in my back yard on the river on Saturday morning...this a first on my garden list.Fantastically, we planted the trees 10 years ago as a potential food source for the Glossies and they haven't let us down.I was lucky to see them as they were so quiet. The movement caught my eye from the top of our block.I got to within 5 m of them and unfortunately they casually flew off towards the river. It is incredible that on an acre and half of revegetated riverfront that such wonderful birds visit us.The Red Tailed BC's often fly over but haven't called in for a break yet.
The other sighting is a first for me...a Red Goshawk, just west of the new traffic bridge in Bundy.I got a terrific look from about 25 m away and am confident it was it....a flatter wing profile than the Square -tailed Kite (which we see regularly);yellow legs without feathers and very barred underneath with shorter wing fingers. The red was redder than all the STKites I've seen and the flight was more rapid without the normal circling motion. As it departed west it went higher and out of sight.Certainly not Little Eagle , Spotted Harrier or Brahminy Kite (all of which are seen regularly also).
All very exciting,
Bill
