Michael Norris, I know of no direct evidence which suggests that the occurrence of Crested Pigeons around Melbourne was the result of the release of captive birds. I always believed it was part of a normal range expansion. I realise that the apparent pattern of expansion is not that of a uniform spread as they appear to have leap-frogged some areas. For instance, Graham Pizzey tells me they haven't yet reached Dunkeld in western Victoria. This may have something to do with habitat preference. Around Melbourne they have a predilection for golf courses.
