Visited the Macquarie Marshes 18-20.2.01 but no luck with the Pied Herons
which are nesting on private property in a remote flooded section associated
with other herons,egrets and ibis.
Great birding with 110 species between Willie Retreat and Quambone.
Highlights Little Bittern, Aust. Bittern, Brolga, Red-backed Kingfisher,
Chestnut-crowned Babbler, Western Gerygone, Diamond Firetail and Spotted
Bowerbird.
Also became bogged, was set upon by a frantic mother Eastern Grey Kangaroo
as we rescued her large joey with its hindlegs wrapped between two strands
of fence wire and found a Desert Tree Frog in my pack when I arrived home.
The reptiles and frogs were very diverse including Marbled Velvet Gecko,
Delma inornata, Gilbert's Dragon species undescribed, Tree Skink, Grey Snake
and a road killed King Brown Snake-the first I have seen in NSW.
Stayed at Willie Retreat which is a station which allows overnighters with a
well appointed bunkhouse.
This area is well worth exploring.
Good birding
